“Formosa,” is the ancient name of Taiwan.  Portuguese navigators, who were awed by the island’s lush landscape, aptly named it Formosa, which in their own language meant beautiful island.  With this “Formosa,” became one of the earliest symbols of the cultural interaction between East and West.
